Laminate Flooring Cost NZ 2026: A Realistic Installed Budget
The honest answer is that laminate flooring does not have one useful “installed price per square metre”. The product price is only one part of the job. A realistic NZ budget also allows for waste, underlay, moisture management, subfloor preparation, removal of the old covering, trims, door adjustments, stairs and installation labour.
As a current retail benchmark, Bunnings New Zealand's laminate category displayed products from about $25.69 to $70.10 per square metre when checked in July 2026. That is a material-only snapshot, not a Power Dekor price and not an installed quote. Product selection, stock and prices change. The range is useful because it shows why multiplying the cheapest pack price by the room area produces a fantasy budget.
The practical formula is:
Measured floor area + cutting waste, multiplied by the chosen product price, plus underlay, preparation, accessories, labour and removal.
If you want the figure that matters, ask for a measure and an itemised scope rather than comparing two isolated per-square-metre numbers.

Start with the area you are actually flooring
A listing may state a price per square metre, but flooring is sold in packs and cut to fit real rooms. Your purchasing area will therefore be greater than the visible floor area.
Measure each rectangular section separately and multiply length by width. Break L-shaped rooms into rectangles. Include connected cupboards if they will receive the same floor. Exclude fixed cabinetry only when the installation design genuinely stops around it. Then add a waste allowance for cuts, board selection and future repairs.
Simple, mostly rectangular rooms normally create less waste than diagonal layouts, narrow corridors, multiple doorways or rooms with many corners. A blanket waste percentage can be misleading, so the installer should confirm it after measuring the layout and checking the plank dimensions. The final order also has to round up to complete packs.
For example, a 40 m² measured area does not mean ordering exactly 40 m². If the agreed cutting allowance takes the order to 43 m² and each pack covers 1.9 m², the order must be rounded to the next complete pack. That pack rounding is small on one room but meaningful across a whole house.

Material price: what changes between laminate ranges?
Thickness is visible on a specification sheet, but it is not a complete quality score. The price of a laminate range can also reflect the core, locking profile, surface texture, edge treatment, décor realism, board format, moisture performance, wear specification, certification and warranty conditions.
That means two products that both say “laminate” are not automatically substitutes. A low-cost board may be entirely sensible for a dry, lightly used bedroom. A busier family room, home office or rental may justify a different surface and locking system. A kitchen or entry has an additional moisture question that ordinary dry-area laminate cannot answer by price alone.
Power Dekor's Premium range is the relevant starting point when the priority is a durable wood-look floor for dry living spaces, bedrooms and offices at a controlled budget. Do not pay for a feature your rooms do not need, but do not remove a required feature merely to win the quote comparison.
The clean comparison is to put each candidate product against the same room schedule and ask:
- Is it approved for every proposed room?
- What underlay and moisture-control system does it require?
- What exclusions or maintenance conditions appear in its warranty?
- Are trims, stairs and transitions available in a suitable finish?
- Is the quoted quantity based on the same measured area and waste assumption?
Underlay is part of the floor system, not free packaging
Most floating laminate installations require an appropriate underlay. Its job may include acoustic improvement, support, separation and, where specified, vapour management over a concrete substrate. The correct product depends on the laminate instructions, the subfloor and any apartment or body-corporate acoustic requirements.
The cheapest roll is not automatically compatible. Too soft, too thick or otherwise unsuitable an underlay can compromise the joint system. Conversely, paying for a premium acoustic claim makes little sense if the building has no relevant performance target and the product is not matched to the floor.
Ask the quote to name the underlay, state whether a separate vapour barrier is required and identify the substrate it will cover. “Underlay included” is not enough information to compare two offers.
Subfloor preparation is where cheap quotes become expensive
Laminate needs a subfloor that meets the product's requirements for dryness, soundness, cleanliness and flatness. Power Dekor's installation instructions place responsibility on the owner, purchaser and installer to verify that the environment and subfloor are suitable before installation.
Preparation may involve removing staples or adhesive residue, securing loose timber boards, grinding local high spots, filling low areas or commissioning moisture testing. A severe level problem, damaged substrate or unresolved leak is not a routine flooring extra. It is a separate defect that should be diagnosed before new boards conceal it.
A quote issued without inspecting the floor can reasonably contain a preparation allowance or a clearly described provisional sum. What it should not contain is a magical assumption that every slab is dry and every old timber floor is flat.
Treat these as warning signs:
- A musty smell, staining or visible moisture near exterior doors
- Cracked or drummy tiles beneath a proposed overlay
- Springy timber flooring or persistent squeaks
- Large ridges or hollows visible under a straightedge
- Previous water damage around a dishwasher, fridge or laundry appliance
- Doors that already scrape the existing floor
Fixing the cause before installation protects the new floor and produces a more honest budget.

Labour depends on the room, not only its size
A large empty rectangle can be quicker to install per square metre than a small hallway with six doors. Labour is affected by furniture, access, layout direction, plank pattern, cutting complexity, transitions, skirting treatment and whether the property remains occupied during the work.
Stairs should be priced separately. They require individual cuts, stair nosing and more time than a flat floor. Likewise, replacing skirting is a different scope from installing scotia against existing skirting. Neither approach is universally superior, but a quote must state which finish is included.
Ask whether the installer has allowed for:
- Delivery and moving packs into the correct environment
- Removal and lawful disposal of old flooring
- Furniture movement and return
- Undercutting door jambs where appropriate
- Trimming doors after the finished floor height changes
- Transitions to tile, carpet or exterior thresholds
- Scotia, skirting or other perimeter finish
- Appliance movement and reconnection boundaries
- Final clean and disposal of packaging
These details explain more about value than a labour rate stripped of scope.
Three worked budgets without invented installed rates
The examples below deliberately use variables instead of pretending one online rate fits every NZ house. Insert the quoted product, underlay and labour rates, then add fixed items.
Scenario 1: One straightforward bedroom
Assume a measured area of 13 m². The installer confirms the required waste and pack quantity after checking the room. The budget lines are:
- Ordered product quantity × selected laminate rate
- Ordered area × compatible underlay rate
- Installation labour for the agreed scope
- One doorway transition if required
- Scotia or skirting treatment
- Furniture and old carpet removal if not completed by the owner
This is often a relatively predictable job, provided the subfloor is sound and the minimum job charge is clear.
Scenario 2: Open-plan living, dining and hallway
Assume 58 m² measured across connected spaces. The bigger area may improve installation efficiency, but additional doorways, kitchen edges and long visual sightlines increase planning and cutting demands. The budget should include the confirmed pack quantity, underlay or vapour-control layer, transitions, perimeter finish, appliance boundaries and preparation allowance.
Do not assume the kitchen can use the same product merely because it is connected. Confirm that the exact flooring is approved for the expected moisture exposure and that the installation details preserve its warranty.
Scenario 3: Occupied whole-house renovation
Assume 110 m² spread across bedrooms, living areas and corridors. Material is not the only large number. Staging the work, moving furniture, managing wardrobes, removing several existing coverings and trimming multiple doors can materially change labour and programme.
The cheapest way to reduce this budget is not necessarily to choose the weakest board. Better savings often come from simplifying transitions, clearing rooms before the crew arrives, resolving substrate defects early and making one confirmed product decision before ordering.
Hidden costs that should not stay hidden
“Hidden cost” usually means an omitted scope item, not an unknowable surprise. A good quote surfaces the likely items before work begins.
Old flooring removal
Carpet and smooth-edge removal differs from lifting glued vinyl, tile or an existing floating floor. Disposal volume and site access matter. Never sand or mechanically disturb suspect legacy flooring or adhesive until asbestos risk has been assessed by a competent person.
Floor-height changes
New underlay and laminate alter finished height. Doors, dishwasher clearance, ranch-slider tracks and transitions may need attention. Checking these interfaces during measuring is cheaper than discovering them after installation.
Moisture or levelling work
Testing, vapour control and levelling are not cosmetic upgrades. They deal with conditions that affect floor performance. The quote should distinguish known work from provisional work that can only be confirmed after uplift.
Trims and finishing
Nosing, reducers, end caps, scotia and skirting can add a noticeable fixed cost, especially in a small project. Count each transition and stair instead of burying them in a vague allowance.
Spare boards
Keeping labelled boards from the same production batch can make a future local repair easier. Discuss the sensible quantity after installation rather than ordering a random extra pile.
How to compare two laminate flooring quotes
Put the quotes side by side and normalise the scope. Check the same measured area, product quantity, waste allowance, product code, underlay, preparation, trims and tax treatment. A lower total created by excluding disposal and door work is not a saving if those tasks still have to be paid for later.
Use this seven-line audit:
- Product: exact range, colour, specification and ordered quantity
- System: named underlay, vapour layer and required accessories
- Preparation: inspections completed, included work and provisional work
- Installation: rooms, layout, stairs and exclusions
- Finishing: skirting or scotia, trims, doors and transitions
- Logistics: delivery, furniture, removal, disposal and schedule
- Commercial terms: GST, deposit, variation process and warranty documents
If one line is missing, ask for clarification in writing. That is less awkward than arguing about an assumption after the boards arrive.

Where to spend and where to save
Spend on a product suitable for the room, a compatible system and correction of genuine subfloor problems. Save by choosing from a sensible décor range, preparing access, moving approved furniture yourself, keeping the plank direction straightforward and avoiding unnecessary transitions.
Do not save by skipping moisture checks, installing over a defective substrate or using an unapproved underlay. Those decisions reduce the initial invoice by transferring risk to the finished floor.
The best-value laminate project is not the one with the lowest pack price. It is the one where the selected floor fits the rooms, every quote covers the same scope and foreseeable extras are identified before installation day.

Frequently asked questions
How much does laminate flooring cost per square metre in NZ?
There is no reliable single installed rate. As a material-only market snapshot, Bunnings NZ displayed laminate products from about $25.69 to $70.10 per m² in July 2026. Your total also depends on ordered pack quantity, underlay, preparation, labour, trims, removal and room complexity. Obtain an itemised quote for the actual property.
How much extra laminate should I order for waste?
The correct allowance depends on room shape, board dimensions, layout and pack coverage. Simple rectangular rooms generally waste less than diagonal layouts, corridors and spaces with many doors. Have the installer calculate cuts and round the result to complete packs.
Does a laminate flooring quote include underlay?
Some do and some do not. The quote should name the underlay and state whether a separate vapour-control layer is required. A generic “included” line does not confirm compatibility with the product or substrate.
Is DIY laminate installation always cheaper?
Only when the installer can measure, assess moisture and flatness, prepare the subfloor, plan expansion details and complete doors and transitions correctly. Tool hire, waste, errors and warranty conditions can remove the apparent saving. Compare the full DIY system cost with an itemised professional scope.
What should I provide to get an accurate quote?
Provide the address, approximate room dimensions, photos, existing floor type, preferred product, access details and any known moisture or level issues. A site measure is still the best basis for confirming quantities, substrate work and finishing details.
